Tonale (Presena Glacier) – Ponte di Legno – Ski Vacations on Ice
Tonale or Passo Tonale is a resort between the two areas of Trentino and Lombardy in Italy.
The whole Tonale skiing area, with the huge Presena Glacier, has gotten a facelift in the last few years with the extension of lifts around Ponte di Legno and Temu. A cable car (two, actually) began linking Passo Tonale and Ponte di Legno in 2007, which created a record long ski run of 11 km between the Presena Glacier and Ponte di Legno. The best skiing takes place on the north and south slopes on opposite sides of the coulee just above the conifers. The Presena Glacier (as of recently that may change) offers skiing through the winter and the summer. The minimum altitude is 1250 meters with the highest point lying just above 3000 meters. Forty slopes with a total of 100 km make the trip from Bolzano (airport), which is just 100 km away, worth it. An amazing 360 km of ski slopes awaits those buying an inclusive ski pass. Snowboarding venues include half pipe, fun park and several jumps. Cross-country skiing goes on for nearly 25 km with night skiing made possible by beaming stadium lamps.
TONALE (PRESENA GLACIER) – PONTE DI LEGNO ACCOMMODATION:
Tonale, as you may have guessed, includes residences and a mix of apartments and hotels (Apparhotels). There are numerous two to three star lodges that offer some doorstep skiing. The best rates, however, are found within a one to two kilometer radius of the slopes.
